Free sewing tutorial and pattern toddler jacket


Nice warm toddler jacket for upcoming fall and winter. The jacket has two decorative pockets. Size: approximately from 1 year old until 1,5 years old.



Materials:
* Fabric - 60 cm x 150 cm (24 inch x 60 inch)
* Fleece - 60 cm x 150 cm) (24 inch x 60 inch) (lining)
* 8 Buttons - 2 cm (4/5 inch)

In the pattern is no seam allowance included. Add in general 1 cm (5/8 inch) seam allowance. Cut the bottom of the back and front pieces and the bottom of the sleeves with 2 cm (1 inch) seam allowance.

Cut the sleeves (red, twice) and the cap (orange, twice and mirrored) from both fabrics.
Cut a left and a right front piece (light green (lower part) and dark green (upper part)), the back pieces (dark blue (lower part) and blue (upper part)) and the decorative pockets (pink,four times) from the fabric for the outside of the jacket.
Cut a left and a right front piece (The lining of the front pieces consists of one part, light green below and dark green above) and the back piece (light blue) from the fleece.

Pin both cap pieces together, with right sides facing, and sew together. Sew the notches on top and on both sides closed. Repeat these steps for the lining of the cap. Pin the outside of the cap to the inside of the cap, right sides facing. Sew inside and outside of the hat together. Leave the bottom open. Turn right-side out. Topstitch.

Start sewing the lining of the jacket: With right sides facing: pin the left and right front piece to the back piece. Sew the sides and the shoulder seams together. Turn right-side out.

Pin and sew the sleeves right sides together, into the armholes. With right sides together, fold the sleeves in half. Sew down the entire side.

Continue with the outside of the jacket: Pin the of the back pieces together, right sides facing. Sew. Topstitch.

With right sides facing, pin down the pocket-pieces. Sew along the outside edge. Turn right-side out. Topstitch. Stitch the buttonholes. Pin upper and lower parts of the left and right front pieces together, right sides facing. Put the decorative pockets between the fabrics into position and pin down. Sew. Topstitch.

With right sides facing, pin the left and right front pieces to the back piece. Sew the sides of the shirt and the shoulder seams together. Turn right-side out. Pin and sew the sleeves right sides together, into the armholes. With right sides together, fold the sleeves in half. Sew down the entire side.

With right sides facing, pin the cap to the outside of the jacket. Put the lining on top and pin down. Sew the entire upper edge of the jacket.

Pin the entire outside of the jacket to the lining, with right sides facing (exept for the sleeves).
Sew. Leave a 12 cm (5 inch) opening on the lower edge of the jacket for turning right-side out. Turn right-side out.

Pull the left sleeves out through the opening at the bottom of the jacket. Sew together, right sides facing. Repeat these steps for the right sleeve. Turn both sleeves right sides out. Topstitch.

Topstitch the outer edges of the jacket.

Using a ruler, mark where your buttons and buttonholes will go. Stitch the buttonholes. Sew the buttons on properly to make certain that they function well and last for years.
